On the Road loves working with cruise ship passengers to provide high quality tours in Punta Arenas! We understand your time schedule in port is limited, and have designed the following tours to fit within this schedule. You can combine up to 2 tours while in port in Punta Arenas.
The city tour will take you by van to the city’s best viewpoints for panoramic views of the Strait of Magellan and Tierra del Fuego; to the city center to walk through the main plaza, driving along the waterfront to see some of the new monuments; walking through the beautiful Municipal Cemetery (voted in top 10 most beautiful in the world); and visiting a wonderful natural history museum. The tour lasts around 3 hours and can be taken in morning or afternoon.
The city tour PLUS will take you by van to the city’s best viewpoints for panoramic views of the Strait of Magellan and Tierra del Fuego; to the city center to walk through the main plaza, driving along the waterfront to see some of the new monuments; walking through the beautiful Municipal Cemetery. Along your tour you will enjoy locally produced foods such as chocolate and calafate, and will finish the tour with a traditional lunch. This tour lasts around 3.5 hours and includes all food.
This entire tour to visit Fort Bulnes is beautiful. You drive 60km South along the Strait of Magellan Coast, with amazing views the entire way. The fort is the most important historical landmark for the colonization of the Patagonia, and is beautifully reconstructed. There are hiking trails throughout the open-aired fort, which give you views of forest, dramatic beach front, and the Southern Coastal mountains. This tour lasts around 3.5 hours.
HISTORICAL FORT BULNES PLUS – GASTRONOMIC
The Fort Bulnes PLUS tour includes stopping for lunch after the tour to eat traditional seafood, empanadas and other delicacies of the region. Lunch is included in the price of the tour.
TREKKING IN THE RESERVA MAGALLANES
You will drive 15 km above Punta Arenas to the Magallanes Forest Reserve for a half-day of moderate trekking. The Reserve takes you into the forests and mountains above Punta Arenas, offering a beautifully spent half-day of low-moderate hiking with incredible scenery. The view at the top of the trail Zapador Austral is incredible; a panoramic vision of the Strait of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego, Punta Arenas, and the forests, hills and valleys of the Reserve. During the hike you will hike through lenga and coigue forests and observe native species of plants, birds and animals. This tour lasts around 3 hours, including driving time.
The Seno Otway penguin park is located 1 hour North of Punta Arenas, along the shores of Otway Sound. The Penguin Tour at Seno Otway offers bird watching of not only the Magallanic penguin colony but also other native birds, such as Caracara, Condors, pink flamingos, and other species of ducks, geese and songbirds, in addition to jackrabbits, sheep, and sometimes armadillos. You will walk on a 1.5km loop trail to 3 different viewpoints, viewing the beautiful scenery and wildlife throughout the walk. This tour lasts 3-3.5 hours. *Availability is subject to penguin population size and health.
THE ULTIMATE PATAGONIA EXPERIENCE TOUR
The full-day tour is a perfect fit for any passenger who wants to get the most authentic Patagonia experience during your time in port. The tour takes you first to visit the beautiful Fort Bulnes. The open aired park includes hiking trails, viewpoints of the Strait of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego and the Darwin Mountain Range, an interactive visitor center and museum, and abundant native plant and animal life. On your return to Punta Arenas you will be taken on a city tour, visiting important monuments, the main plaza (plaza de armas) and the city’s best viewpoint.
After the city tour you will drive 33km north to enjoy the second half of day in a traditional Patagonia lamb barbecue (asado). Upon arrival at the estancia you will receive a Calafate Sour cocktail, appetizers with king crab, and then enjoy a meal of roasted Magallanes lamb which has been slow roasting for over 5 hours. To liven up the meal, a group of regional musician and dancers will perform, and then give the passengers the opportunity to learn the basic steps of these traditional dances. After enjoying the afternoon at the estancia, you will be returned to your cruise ship in Punta Arenas. This tour is for groups of a minimum of 15 passengers.
